September 2021 release : Moon Layering Stencil - Tutorial 2 - A "Moody" Moon

Being a Cancerian I love everything lunar. If I can get a moon into my artwork, it makes me very happy. I used to make moons with scraps of paper until it hit me - stencil it! So here is the Moon Layering Stencil Set and a how-to on one of my favourite ever techniques.

I found this technique through a tutorial from Prairie Paper and Ink - there's a blog post and a YouTube video. Amy's blog is chocked full of awesome ideas and tutorials so definitely take the time to potter around!

Tutorial #2 : A Moody Moon Effect

What you'll need for this Card

* LoveAll Crafts Moon Layering Stencil

* Distress Oxide Sprays - Chipped Sapphire, Cracked Pistachio and Pickled Raspberry

* Distress Oxide Ink in Chipped Sapphire

* Distress Spray Stain in Antiqued Bronze

* Watercolour Paper - I'm using Hobbycraft 190gsm watercolour paper

* Versafine Black Onyx Ink Pad

* Lavinia Stamps - an old fairy stamp and Moon Pods

* Tim Holtz Idea-ology sentiment sticker

* 6x6 Card Blank

* Water Mister or Spray Bottle

* Stamping platform or acrylic block

Let's Get Crafting!

1. Put down the inner mask of the size moon you want to use. I'm using the large moon in the stencil set. You can either tape it down or just lay it on the card. It doesn't matter too much if it moves.

2. Place in a spray box or somewhere you can make mess with your sprays.

3. I'm starting with chipped sapphire, then using cracked pistachio, pickled raspberry and finally the antiqued bronze. Be generous with the spray and build it up to your desired look. I'm spraying, adding some water, blotting with a paper towel and then repeating to build up the layers.

4. Remove the inner mask stencil.

5. Spray the whole thing with water. Spray with the bottle facing into the moon so you're spraying around the moon, facing the middle of the moon. You want to activate the distress oxide and make it move across the moon space. The paper might curl a bit when wet so use a stick or similar to hold the middle down.

6. Keep adding water and drying to get your desired moody effect.

7. Cut to size (just a little shy of 6x6)

8. Time to stamp! I'm using a Stamp Easy platform but you can use an acrylic block. I'm also using Versafine Black Onyx Ink.

9. Distress the edges with a bit of Chipped Sapphire Distress Oxide.

10. Embellish. I love a bit of sparkle so I'm using Liquid Pearls in Petal Pink and Buttercup.

11. Add a sentiment - this is a Tim Holtz Idea-ology sentiment sticker

12. Ta-dah!

New Release: September 2021 : Moon Layering Stencil - Tutorial 1

Being a Cancerian I love everything lunar. If I can get a moon into my artwork, it makes me very happy. I used to make moons with scraps of paper until it hit me - stencil it! So here is the Moon Layering Stencil Set and a two quick how to's to show how versatile this simple set is....

Tutorial #1 : Using the Stencil Set as a Layering Stencil

What you'll need to make this card:

* LoveAll Crafts Moon Layering Stencil

* Distress Oxide Inks - Speckled Egg, Weathered Wood and Mermaid Lagoon

* Pink Ink Designs Hare Stamp

* Promarkers - Lilac and Powder Pink

* Versafine London Fog and Black Onyx Ink Pad

* Violet Studios sentiment (you can use whatever you'd like!)

* Water Mister or spray bottle

* Slimline Base Card (I'm using the Anita's Slimline pre-cut cards) and Envelope

* White cardstock (I'm using just a standard 190gsm white cardstock to ink on to)

* Scissors for fussy cutting

Let's get crafting!

1. Grab your new stencil set and decide on which size moon you'd like to use. I'm using the large moon in this tutorial.

2. Tape down the outer mask. I'm going to do a base with Speckled Egg Distress Oxide Ink. Start on the outside and move into the middle to make the edges darker and give the moon a more 3D look.

3. Keeping the outer mask on, place one of the pattern layers on and ink - this time I'm using Weathered Wood Distress Oxide Ink.

4. Build up the pattern as much as you'd like, always keeping the outer mask down to keep your moon crisp.

5. Moon done!

6. Now place the inner mask over your newly made moon. You can tape it but make sure the Distress Oxide Ink is completely dry otherwise you may end up lifting some of it with the tape.

7. I'm doing a simple ray effect for my background in Mermaid Lagoon Distress Oxide Ink. I start on the moon with my brush and work my way out so it's darker near the moon.

8. Spray with a bit of water and blot with a piece of kitchen towel and cut to size.

9. Now on to the Hare. I've stamped the amazing Hare from the Hare set from Pink Ink Designs, using Versafine Black Onyx Ink.

10. I've coloured with some Promarkers and added a few Liquid Pearls in Petal Pink. Fussy cut the hare and attached to the Slimline Card Base. I've finished it off with a "With Love" sentiment from Violet Studios.

Foiling with Stencils - Tutorial, Hints and Tips

We've been looking for ways to get more out of stencils and came across this amazing technique to bring extra sparkle to your art work.

What you'll need:

  • DecoFoil Transfer Gel (about £8 - available widely in the UK)
  • A stencil of your choice - we're going to use the Tallulah Vintage Car Layering Stencil Set. There is a YouTube Video available on how to use this layering stencil set.
  • Hot Foils and a Laminator or Foiling Machine - We're using the Tattered Lace Foil collection and a Tattered Lace Foiling Machine
  • Inks, paints or pens - a way to colour the rest of the image. We'll be using Distress Oxides and Inks,
  • Cardstock - whatever colour you'd like. We suggest you use something thicker than copier paper as thinner paper may buckle a bit when you apply the Transfer Gel

Let's get crafting!

1. Place down layer 1 - the body and ink normally. I'm using Tattered Rose Distress Oxide from Tim Holtz/Ranger Inks and some cheap cosmetic brushes from Ebay to apply the ink.

2. Place the second layering stencil down and apply the DecoFoil transfer gel like you would any medium gel with a spatula. Don't be stingy with the amounts and try to get the gel as even as possible across the stencil to ensure everything is covered. The foil will not take to areas with thin amounts of gel on, but will also bleed if you put too much on so it takes a bit of practise! Once on, leave to dry for at least an hour, or until all of the medium has turned transparent (it'll be opaque white when wet).

3. Choose your foil. I'm using the Rose Gold from the Tattered Lace Precious Metals set. Cut a piece that covers the whole area and lay over the top.

4. Place in the foil carrier and then into the Foiling Machine or Laminator. Each machine will act slightly differently so it's worth doing a few test runs before you make your card to make sure you get it spot on!

5. Let it cool down fully before removing the foil. You can see on mine that the foil didn't take fully as my gel was a bit thin. No matter, I like the distressed look.

6. Now I'm going for a double layer of foiling because I love sparkle but you could continue the layering stencil with a permanent ink like StayzOn or even emboss the rest... Place down layer 3 and repeat the foiling process!

7. Apply the DecoFoil Transfer Gel - being as smooth as possible. Let dry for at least an hour, or until all of the gel has turned transparent.

 <<DRY

8. Choose your foil colour - I'm using the matt Pink from the Candyfloss set this time.

9. Place in the carrier sheet then into the laminator. Let it cool down completely before removing the foil.

10. Finish off the layering stencil by adding the tyres. I'm using Black Soot Distress Oxide.

11. I'm adding a quick, simple background to the car as I don't want to take the focus off the shiny loveliness so I'm using the car mask that comes with the set and the Ray Stencil from the LoveAll Crafts Background Stencil Set and colouring with Wilted Violet Distress Ink. I've also added a little "Thanks" sticker to the number plate.
