What you'll need for this project:
* Card Blank - either pre-made or make yourself. I'm using an Anita's 5x5 White Card.
* Something to colour the cake in with. I'm using DewDrop VersaMagic Chalk Ink in Pink Petunia for the main colour and Ranger/Tim Holtz Distress Ink in Picked Raspberry for my ribbons.
* Blending brushes/pads - whatever you're happiest to use when inking or applying your medium.
* Something for the candles. I find using a texture paste great for these. I'm using Cosmic Shimmer Sparkle Texture Paste in Lush Pink for the candle bodies and Bright Sunshine for the flames.
I'm also using:
* Nuvo Glitter Drops in Sugar Plum
* Black pen (Pilot Hi-Techpoint)
* Flower Embellishments
Let's get crafting!
1. Place down the Cake Body Stencil and colour the lowest layer cake you want to do. A tip here is to ink from the sides so you get the biggest concentration of ink at the edges and in the middle it is lighter - this will give you a more 3D effect.
2. Remove the cake body stencil and put the cake top stencil (long ovals)down in place. Then take the middle cake body mask and place it where you want to put your next layer - doing this will give you a better looking cake.

3. Remove all stencils and put the Cake Body stencil back down, positioning for the middle stencil
and colour:
4. Repeat step 2. Place down the matching top layer and then the next cake mask on top so you get a little indent in the cake to place your next layer on:
and colour:
5. Repeat for the final layer. You won't need to cake mask this layer so just do the top as is.
6. Giving you your base:
7. Now we're going to add ribbons. This can be a jam/frosting layer also - go nuts with your creativity! Place the appropriately sized ribbon over the correct layer and colour in. Again if you colour from the edges so they are darker you'll get a more 3D effect.
repeat to your desired effect...
8. Now on to candles! I'm using a glitter paste so using the candles stencil I add candles to each layer. Make sure you let your paste dry before doing each layer otherwise you'll end up with a splodgy mess!
and add flames...
9. I'm adding a piped icing look with Nuvo Drops so go around each edge
10. Draw in little wicks for extra effect
11. I've added a few flower embellishments from my stash and cut it down to fit onto a 5x5 card. I've inked the sides using the Picked Raspberry Distress Ink just to give it a little lift.
With this set you don't have to do layered cakes, you can do stacked cakes also by using one cake body size only. You can also use the ribbon layer as an icing layer on the top for a different effect. Embellish with die cuts, ribbons, flowers, gems - the opportunities are endless! Here are a few more cards made with this stencil set...
